Electric beds for nursing homes and people with Alzheimer’s disease: positions, height adjustment and split sideguards

Electric beds for nursing homes are a central element of every stay in healthcare facilities. In this article we will analyze different elements such as positions, height adjustment and split sideguards.

The most common positions for the bed: Trendelenburg, Reverse Trendelenburg and semi-seated

Beds in nursing homes offer a wide range of adjustments to ensure maximum comfort and optimal patient care. Trendelenburg and Reverse Trendelenburg are the most useful positions and are named after the late 19th century German surgeon Friedrich Trendelenburg.

Trendelenburg position tilts the bed with the head section down (towards the floor). It is used to promote venous return and improve circulation in some medical situations. In contrast, the Reverse Trendelenburg position, which raises the head above the feet level, facilitates breathing and reduces the risk of gastroesophageal reflux – particularly useful for patients with respiratory or digestive difficulties.

Electric beds allow the patient to assume a sitting or semi-sitting position and thus transform the bed into an armchair. A great way to bring patients into a sitting position without moving or getting out of bed: a comfortable situation that favors socialization and participation in activities or interaction with other residents and people visiting the facility.

Benefits of the ultra-low position in electric beds for Alzheimer’s patients

Among the electric beds offered by CFS Italia, there are some models with an ultra-low position adjustment, particularly suitable for people with Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia. Compared to many beds on the market that only reach a height of 25 cm from the ground, these electric beds are able to go as low as 15 cm from the ground (13.5 cm for the platform section).

The advantages are tangible:

  • significantly reduce the risk of falls at night or at times when medical support is not always present, especially when combined with a bedside mattress;
  • high sideguards limit the patient’s freedom: often they are prohibited by law and require permission from the relatives of the hospitalized person to be used;
  • create a safe environment without compromising the dignity or autonomy of the patient, in full compliance with ethical and respectful care of the person.

The function of split sideguards in nursing home beds

The electric beds offered by CFS Italia offer the possibility of installing split sideguards. They are an intermediate solution that protects the patient, without compromising their freedom of movement.

They can be mounted near the head or near the feet: they offer support in preventing accidental falls, guarantee more freedom of movement for the patient and can be used as support for getting out of bed or sitting down.

Split sideguards respect the individuality of the patient, create a less restrictive environment, promote the autonomy and well-being of the patient and ensure safety. They can be very practical for patients who are not too fragile and still maintain a certain degree of mobility.
