Furnishing solutions for health care centers: designing safe and welcoming spaces

Polyclinics, or health care centers, are facilities that must respond to different needs, and at the same time guarantee operational efficiency, safety and comfort for patients and medical staff. For this reason, the choice of furniture is not only aesthetic, but strategic: customization and modularity play a key role in the organization of spaces.

The differences between health care centers and outpatient clinics

Compared to a medical clinic or a doctor’s office, a polyclinic manages a greater flow of people, accommodates more medical specialties and must comply with stringent regulations, especially if accredited by the National Health Service (SSN, in Italy).

These are the main features of each healthcare facility:

  • doctor’s office/clinic: it is a smaller space, designed for a single doctor or a small team. The furniture is essential and focused on practicality and hospitality;
  • polyclinic: it is a larger structure, which hosts different specialties and a greater flow of patients. Here the furniture must respond to criteria of modularity, organization of spaces and hygiene;
  • accredited private health care center: these are facilities that offer services covered by the National Health System (SSN), with specific regulatory requirements for the furniture and layout of the rooms.

The entrance to a polyclinic: business card and organizational hub

The entrance to a health care center is more than just a reception area: it is the first point of contact between the patient and the facility, and a key hub in the organization of flows. A well-designed layout can reduce waiting times, improve the perception of the service and make patients less stressed.

This area must convey order, professionalism and hospitality. A well-designed decor can improve the overall perception of the facility. Some key elements are:

  • functional reception counter, with multiple areas for document management;
  • accessible reception, for people with reduced mobility;
  • comfortable and spaced seats to make the wait more relaxing, and that are easy to clean and disinfect;
  • lighting and colours designed to create a pleasant and reassuring environment, usually with neutral tones;
  • clear signage to direct patients without the need for continuous assistance.

Customization of furniture based on the type of polyclinic

Every center has specific needs, and the furniture must reflect its identity and the needs of its patients.

Some examples: a sports clinic can be customized with themed prints; a general or specialist medical center must give priority to modularity and functionality, with trolleys for each intended use; a diagnostic clinic pays great attention to spaces to facilitate patient flows and the use of equipment.
