What we identify as “serving table” for hospital use is a versatile table top with a column and four wheels that make it easy to move. However, a distinction must be made between overbed tables and mayo tables, based on the ward where they are used. Let’s analyse their main features and functions.
In this context, overbed tables are generally paired with or attached to a bedside table. Their main function is to be a shelf for objects, but they are also used as a dining table: they are adjustable in height and the top extends toward the patient, allowing them to consume their meal more comfortably. The top can tilt to a lectern, and the patient can place a book or tablet on it, an ideal solution for those who cannot get out of bed. When not in use, the table takes up less space since it can be folded down. The C-shaped base on which the casters are equipped is the result of careful design: this particular shape is perfectly integrated with a relax couch or a wheelchair. In addition, it can function as foot support.
The most commonly used materials are painted steel for column and base and ABS top (a plastic material that is durable and easy to clean).
In the operating or pre-operating room, mayo tables are used next to the operating table thanks to an off-center, cantilevered column. They always have an easily removable tray that can be taken to the sterilization area after the procedure. In addition, their tops can be fixed or swivel 360°.
The material used is always stainles steel, whose smooth, non-porous surface prevents the proliferation of bacteria and germs.
